The Hours Review Essay Example

The Hours Review Paper Essay on The Hours About these words (I, unfortunately, can not remember them verbatim) shocked me a few years ago, when I first saw the movie, based on the novel of Cunningham. The film The Hours, which I fell in love at first sight. I do not even remember how many times I watched it: 5-6 times, no less. Definitely I remember that many do not understand the first time, did not have time for time offset seams that are constantly taking place in the film. And it is absolutely unknown to me (and, therefore, not clear) was a line associated with Virginia Woolf. I had to read Mrs. Dalloway, what I do not regret. I was just shocked! Anything like this before, I did not read. The film, superimposed on the prose of Wolfe, of course, sounded completely different and completely fascinated me. And only a few years after this story I came upon the hero of the occasion -. Cunninghams novel The Hours » Honestly, I took him in hand with fear, very afraid to be disappointed. And generally I do not like to read the book after the film. What a sense for these reasons that I can not be objective in this novel, too many overlapping one to the other took place in my mind, I too firmly to fit in its cultural context. When reading The Hours is constantly before my eyes were the picture from the film, or was reminded of the scene from Wolfe. And I constantly compare Cunningham with her, although I understand that this is very different writers We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The Hours Review specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The novel did not disappoint me, though, and left some the turmoil in the soul. Influence of Virginia Woolf is very strong, but Cunningham is not something that does not try to hide it, on the contrary, he cares for her work, which nowadays is so rare! This is a novel about the hours of our lives that slowly, in many ways, but surely ticking all the same ending. We all will die. But we all love this life, we have all the time we hope for the best. And this is the whole point. Otherwise Otherwise the death, but the other, a terrible, untimely. Death (as in the novel several of its variants) really emphasizes is not that life itself, it flows and flows themselves, but the essence of this life, meaning, for which is (or should not) live. And death is (as it turns out) links in a single destiny of heroes node, widely separated in time and space from each other It has everything: a. The history of the unfortunate writer, in his crucial dilemma of to be or not to be , and the modern history of New Yorkers with their ups and downs, homosexuals and lesbians, with AIDS, which, however, does not take away from the entirely novel (I usually do not like such a heap of problems). For lovers of reflection on the consumer society (the period of its formation, more precisely) also has some interesting thoughts And this is a novel about a writers work, one that will redeem all.. Not by chance the two protagonists of the novel writers, one the reader, and another a very similar copy of a literary heroine In short, worthy of the novel: good language (more precisely, translation, probably), the unexpected development of the plot. philosophicity unobtrusive. Frankly, I was even hurt that this novel was so strange to me.

Vagina Monologues essays

Vagina Monologues essays The Vagina Monologues was a play performed based on a small book that included a series of interviews of a diverse group of over 200 women discussing their vaginas and sexuality. The interviews performed ranged from funny to provocative to maddeningly serious. The women ranged from young to old, married and single, heterosexual, bisexual and lesbian, and included many races. With phrases like If your vagina got dressed, what would it wear? the play asks questions that are oddly provocative yet bring up issues that question peoples perceptions about their own sexuality. The play was directed by a group of 5 women who discussed and commented on each of the interviews. The set for the play was a simple formation of splitting the stage into two sides. On one side, the commentators in five chairs and on the other a spot light fell strategically on the woman whose interview was being performed. By maintaining this simplicity, the play emphasizes the importance of each interview and allows the audience to focus on the character without being distracted by a cluttered set. I enjoyed this aspect of the play because I felt that it allowed the audience to fully appreciate the acting skills of the actresses. The interviews range from serious sad descriptions of rape or incest to happy recollections of a first kiss to blatant anger towards visits to the gynecologist. In one particular interview, the woman describes being raped by her father at a young age. The topic seemed like an uncomfortable one in that most of the people the audience were probably not at ease with hearing about the topic in such a public arena. But I feel that this was the whole goal of the Vagina Monologues to bring awareness to people and allow them to gain a sense of comfort in discussing issues about sexuality that are normally considered taboo. Another woman gave a comical interpretation of her opinions about the gynecologist. In a lo...

History and Philosophy of Education - Experiential Learning and Essay

History and Philosophy of Education - Experiential Learning and Marketisation of Education - Essay Example In Experiential learning, the question is, does it require the guidance of a practioner in order for learning to take place. Practioners are always necessary in any process of learning, and experiential learning is not an exception. To acquire newknowledge from experience, an individual has to have problem solving skills which willenable him/ herto make decisions. This aspect is essential toenable a studentto apply skillsgained through theexperience undergone while learning (Maxwell, 2011).Experience as an issue in experiential learning is not the main factor thata student can acquire knowledge from. A student might pass through natural processes that might instill knowledge in him. Howeverwithout a guide given, such knowledge will not be helpful to him/ her since with time, skills accumulated, student will not be put into use (Palmer and Cooper, 2003). To Aristotle, passing through an experience, acquiring skills and being unable to implement is not the objective of education. Since by learning, a student has to be able to apply skills gained in real life situations and challenges (Curren, 2000). The applicative part of skill acquisition is the problem and for a student to be able to implement a skill he/she needs guidanceand this normally comes from the practitioners. The idea of learning through experience has a long historical perspective and it isJohn Deweywho proposed it. Dewey (1998) states experience is an integral part of learning; however practitionersalso play an important rolethat is to ensurestudents are able to apply knowledge gained from an experiencein different perspectives of their lives. This notion of Dewey, clearly agrees with my views of experimentation as an aspect of experiential learning. It is necessary for practitioners to introduce thecurriculum whenstudents are taken to the outdoorlearningwith supervision from educators, as it would allow students to learnfrom a series of adventures where real life examples. Another aspect from Dewey (1998)involves the issue of reflection, where student must engage actively in the activity took place and toreflect on the experience later to grasp the new ideas instilled. Based on this, experiential leaning involves experience and reflection and therefore knowledge and skills are gained through various circumstances, an individual passes through which determines the nature of skills attained and only after effective reflection guided by a practitioner.Reflection involves paying attention to the ideas leant and thus consolidating them. Reflection as an issue of experiential learning is not beneficial without supervision. There are many aspects of reflective tendencies during the process of experiential learning. However, it has some drawback (Palmer and Cooper, 2003); student will not think deeper into the meaning of the experience passed as he/shemight take it as play attained. Also it might involvelack of concentration from the student. According to Kolb, learning is a multidime nsional process (Palmer and Cooper, 2003) and it involvesfour stages that are toexperience, observe, reflect and experiment. Kolb advocates for supervision of a learner during the process of reflection. After a period of time, learning will have taken place as students had gained an educative experience with useful guides given from

Our Different Generations Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Our Different Generations - Research Paper Example ) and North Korea (No, Kim Jong Il was not their supreme leader ever since) who wished that they could crush us and take over the world with their socialist ways. America protected the world back then. That's why we got involved in Vietnam. We were the world police, we've always tried to play referee between warring nations and back then, aside from Vietnam and their likes, they usually listened to us and quit fighting before we had to send troops in to stop the playground fights. Life was easy for us back then. Our economy was swinging and money was not a problem. Well, I did still have to find a part time job after school because my parents kept me on a specific allowance and credit cards were not in prevalence then. So I worked at the local mom and pop grocer bagging goods. Just like you go to the local 7-11 after school to work there part time. But back then, America was safer and we did not have a fear of being held up at gun point at our place of work like you kids do in the 20 00's. Back then John F. Kennedy was our idealistic president who believed that America needed to provide more equality to the blacks in the country. You see, at the time the schools were not racially integrated and there were separate facilities, seats, and the like for the blacks and whites in the communities. In fact, you would never have seen a black family in a white community and vice-versa then. But JFK as we called him, and his brother Robert, the attorney general at the time, they both put a stop to that practice. It's because of those two men that it became alright for black and white people to become friends and share a friendly conversation with each other. If those forward thinking brothers did not exist, you would not have Dzwayne for a best friend now. Our society simply would not have allowed it. During the 1960's, the parents and relatives of our friends were like our own mom and dad too. Since nobody has social networking and cellular phones then, we actually had to walk up to the front door of our friends homes and politely ask our friend's mom or dad if our friend was home and if we could come to visit or if he could come out to play. Normally, our parents would also be friends and we would even share a Sunday family picnic with them whenever we could. You don't see that anymore today. I can't understand why you kids try to do your best to avoid dealing with your own or your friend's parents. Do they carry some sort of transmittable disease or something? I just don't get it. Why don't you kids like to play in the great outdoors anymore? The Vitamin D would do you a lot of good. My generation grew up healthy and strong because we did all our playing outdoors We had the after school baseball league, the skating rinks, and dance halls that we frequented over the weekend. We had great fun socializing in person and trying to start new trends in dress and lingo. These days, you kids do everything on the computer. You don't even see each other that often anymore. If you did not have to attend actual school, I doubt your parents would ever get you out of the house to meet people. I wish there was something I could do to tear you away from your game console, your pocket game console, your mobile phone, your Ipod, and whatever else gadget it is that you carry in that heavy back pack of yours. You don't even know what a book looks

Party Press Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Party Press - Essay Example Mass media refers to the transfer of knowledge and information to an unlimited mass audience. Phones or cell phones may not usually be considered as a mass medium; this is because telephones are the device meant for only two way communication between two or more than two people. Previously there have been only six categories of mass media; that is, Print, Recordings, Cinemas, Radio, Television and the Internet. Now a new category has been introduced in the mass media, which are cell phones. Cell phones are now being considered as the seventh mass media channel; also called as digital media. Cell phones are the only mass media that are always carried by the user. They also provide nearly 100% accuracy regarding the audience and that every content that has ever passed through the device could be traced back; whether it is calls, messages, or any other media content such as movies, videos, or music. In ancient times the Church was the sole source of information for the people. The Churc h had the complete power over the minds of the citizens and was very powerful. They were the ones responsible to disintegrate the information in whatever form and style that suits them. After the Gutenberg’s invention of metal movable type, books became widely available. They were then the source of knowledge and information. ... The 1960s saw the first innovation in the form of open reel audio tapes; then came the C-cassettes and music cartridges in the 1970s and later in 1990s the MP3 files were the new digital storage medium for music. The records were not only limited to music storage but also provided storage for videos and movies. In the 1970s, movies started appearing in video cassettes. Later recording also expanded to include categories such as computer programs, video games and TV shows. Due to these advancements the music industry also evolved to include the pop music, besides the orchestra. Cinemas were introduced in the 1910s as the third mass media channel. Watching a movie in cinemas is an exhilarating experience for many. Movies were the first mass media that involved moving images and pictures. The visual effect they created was unmatched by any other mass media. At first movies were thought as means that could diminish the value of books. But this was not the case. Some of the best sellers w ere converted into movies, while in other cases the best of the Hollywood movies were written in print. Not only books and novels, but comics were also made into super-hit films, such as Superman, Batman, and Spiderman etc. The radio became the next mass media. With the invention of radio, came a concept of broadcast schedule and audience were required to listen to the shows when they were aired, and not just as they wished; as was the case in all the previous mass medias. It became the channel for commercial communication and brought its audience a wide range consisting of news, information, dramas, music, debate etc. Radio first brought the concept of breaking news; disseminating news and information as it is happening. Radios were sustained by

Advantage And Disadvantages Of Dividend Payout Policy Finance Essay

Advantage And Disadvantages Of Dividend Payout Policy Finance Essay When a company has a surplus of profit, it can be used either pay back the shareholders or reinvest into the business. The way that company pay back to shareholders is call dividend payout. In the recent years, the number of companies paying dividends has declined. For example, the PSEG Company in the United State, the payout ratio was about 67% in 2004 and fallen to 45% by 2007.Shows in the graph below: (http://www.pseg.com/index.jsp) This essay will mainly discuss the advantage and disadvantage about the dividend-paying. What are dividends? Dividends are payment made by corporation to the shareholders. Dividends come from the profit earned by company. There are two ways where company spends the surplus of profit, one is to reinvest to the business and the other is to pay back to the shareholders as dividends. The companies who pay dividends are usually taking no benefit if the reinvest the surplus profit back into the business, under this condition dividends are chosen to pay to th e shareholders, which is call payout. The forms of dividends are variable. The most common one will be the made by cash, which is the most common method of sharing corporate profits with the shareholders of the company. The second one is the stock dividends that is paid in form of additional share and it is counted by proportion, for example, if the shareholder owns 100 shares of the stock with 5% stock dividends, the shareholder can gain 5 more shares. Others like property dividends are taken as dividends payout as well. Advantage of dividend payout policy There is certain amount of people of the rightist position state that company pays a high dividend payout is important for investors for the reasons that paying dividends can convince the shareholders about the companys financial well-being. The higher rate of dividends payout shows better the company operating as well as larger number of profit, which might attracts the investors. Dividends are also attractive for the investors who want to get the stable current income easily. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“There is also a natural clientele of investors, such as the elderly, who looking to their stock portfolios for a steady source of cash to live onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (P456, Richard, 2008). In principle, the shareholders could sell a part of the shares to gain money even if the company does not pay dividends, but it is more convenience for the investors to get the money if companies pay the dividends by checks. In this case, the payout policy of cash dividends will reduce the cost of transaction as well as the inconvenience for the shareholders selling the shares. In addition, the long-term stable dividends payouts could help the company less affected by the changes of the dividends. Those companies with long history of stable dividends will be less influenced if the dividends decrease, but will be positively affected when dividends payout increases or even dividends stay the same level. Furthermore, companies without a dividend history are generally viewed favorably when they declare new dividends. The dividends announcement has resulted in a 4% rise of the stock price according to the dividend initiations studied by Healy and Palepu (P448, Richard, 2008). Many companies have taken the dividends paid back to shareholders as payout policy. For example Microsoft, the largest software company in the entire world, has announced their first dividends payout in 2003. The amount of the money has been divided into two forms of dividends, one was one-time dividends and the other was stock dividends paid quarterly installments by a unit as per share. (P457, Richard, 2008). Disadvantage of dividend payout policy Firstly, the radical state that dividends payout can be heavier than capitals gain when taxation of dividends is larger than the capital gains. Under this condition, company should put the spare profit back into the business by repurchase shares. It makes sense for the reasons that the capital gains have a tax advantage. When companies use the money to repurchase the share, the income will be larger because with the lower rate of tax on capital earnings, comparing to dividends payouts to shareholders with higher rate of tax on dividends. In the banking industries, a part of banks have stopped paying dividends to shareholders in 2009, according to the Capital Report. In the meanwhile, there are 202 firms have cut their dividends and 74 of which paid none at all (Web1). Secondly, the level of dividends payout can reflect the information about the confidence of the management from the company in the future, which will have an influence to the stock price. Generally, companies that pay dividends are sending a message to the market that their earnings are real which will result in the investors comfort about their investment. On the other hand, once the companies decide to cut the dividend it is also sending the information that they cannot maintain the dividends. However, the company might be able to cheat on their operation by overstating the earning to attract investors, but it is risky in the long term because the actual condition of the company will not have sufficient money to pay the dividends. The consequence will be costly if the companies choose a high dividend without getting enough profit. Most managers will not change the dividends without consideration about the operation of company, but they will increase the dividends only if they are c onfident it can be maintained. Thirdly, the consideration of a dividend policy might be irrelevant because investors have the ability to create their own dividends. It means that investors can be able to make their own à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"dividendà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ by adjust the investment into different areas. For example, the investors who prefer a stable income are more likely to put their money into the bonds with the stable interest rates. In the case, the stock with dividends pay back will lose the advantage because of the flexible value. Investors who have invested to the bonds will not pay attention to the dividend policy of a particular company. Conclusion: Taking the dividend payout policy can attract certain amount of investors, and it is convenience for those investors who require stable and simple income. But dividends sometimes have tax disadvantage if the tax rate of dividend is higher than capital gains. And dividends are usually more flexible, comparing to the interest rates of bonds. It is important for a company to think whether to take the dividend payout policy by considering the assets, earnings, investments opportunities, market value and other factors about the company.
